Red Cardinal Flower (Lobelia Cardinalis) is a native North American perennial. It grows in the wild on stream banks, pond edges, and wet meadows from New Brunswick to Florida. It blooms from late summer to early fall, throwing up red spikes that reach 3-4 feet tall. It is hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 10 – which means it comes back from the winters in Minnesota and the summers in Georgia without any fuss at all. Lobelia Cardinalis boasts one of the richest reds – and the hummingbirds find it before you’ve even finished planting. It is technically a short-lived perennial – crowns produce best in the second or third year.
