Chaters Double Hollyhock (Alcea Rosea) is one of the oldest and most recognizable old cottage garden flowers. Chaters Double Hollyhock is a real heirloom variety, grown in European gardens since at least the 16th century. Hollyhock plants are Ideal for USDA Zones 1-12. Stems grow 7.5 feet tall, with flowers that are fully double, layered like peonies, in a range of deep crimson/black, buttercream, apricot, and rose colours. It grows as a biennial, meaning that in the first year, you’ll get a rosette of leaves, and in the second, the spire grows and flowers from base to tip from summer until fall. These flowers are edible, deer-resistant, and really attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
