New England Aster (Aster Novae-angliae) is a perennial native to North America, that blooms from early September until hard frost, and that makes it really valuable when most of the garden is winding down. It grows 3-4 feet tall, producing dozens of 1-inch star-shaped flowers in deep violet-purple with bright yellow centers. It grows wild across meadows and roadsides from Quebec to Alabama and does quite well when planting in USDA Zones 2-8. It comes back year after year from the same roots, gradually spreading by rhizomes to form dense colonies. You may buy Aster seeds for containers, pods, or outdoor beds. These wildflowers also attract bees and butterflies.
